SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - First-year Jill Willis netted the game winning goal with four minutes remaining in regulation to lift Union 2-1 over Dartmouth College on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.
The goals came from junior Stephanie Bourque and Willis in the third period. Sophomore Maddie Leaney assisted on both goals while senior Maren Friday and junior Mallory Mauracher both added an assist on the night.
Union put the offensive pressure on early in the first, recording six shots on goal to Dartmouth's one in the first 12 minutes of play but Dartmouth struck first. A pass across from the left side by Meredith Jesen to Cally Dixon let her chip the puck at the top of the crease into the net.
Union registered three additional shots on goal in the first period compared to Dartmouth's two, but neither team could capitalize on their chances.
In the second period, play was even as Dartmouth and Union both recorded six shots on net but neither team could take advantage of their opportunities.
In the third period, Union dominated, registering fourteen shots to Dartmouth's three. Seven minutes into the third period a penalty on Dartmouth led to Bourque netting the game-tying goal.
After receiving a pass from Friday, Bourque skated to the top of the slot and fired a wrist shot through traffic and the five hole of Dartmouth's goalie into the net.
Nine minutes later, Willis netted the game winning goal. A rebound popped out to the left from an initial shot from Leaney in the slot in which Mauracher retrieved and shot on net, hitting the right post. Willis skated in and knocked the rebound home.
The Garnet Chargers took a penalty in the dying minutes of the game but a last minute defensive effort by Union secured the 2-1 win over Dartmouth.
Senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas made 12 saves to register her second win of the weekend.
Women's Hockey is back in action next weekend when they travel to Cornell University and Colgate University for a conference weekend series. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm on Friday and Saturday.
