Tough task: Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun will play compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the Denmark Open second round today.

ODENSE: National men doubles shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun have finally cleared the first round of the Denmark Open in their third attempt.

And little improvements like these are keeping world No. 15 Wei Chong-Kai Wun going in their bid to become the country’s top pair one day.

The duo will take on their more illustrious teammates Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the second round at the Jyske Bank Arena in Odense today.

They defeated Callum Hemming-Ethan Van Leeuwen of England 21-11, 21-10 in the first round on Tuesday.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun are currently ranked third in the country after world No. 4 Aaron-Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (eighth).

After only playing together since 2021, Wei Chong-Kai Wun know that they have some catching up to do.

“It’s good to win the Denmark Open opener for the first time. We were paired together post Covid-19 in 2021 but since then, we have improved but there have been ups and downs,” said the 25-year-old Wei Chong.

“We are inconsistent, so we need to have the right mindset to be more solid.”

Said the 24-year-old Kai Wun: “Wei Chong and I have been training really hard for almost four years. At times, we do feel like giving up but we keep supporting one another and try to turn our game around.

Kai Wun said they were of different characters but driven by the same spirit to succeed.

“I love watching movies, he loves playing video games but on court, we are equally determined to beat our opponents,” said Kai Wun.

On the game against the Paris Olympic Games bronze medallists, Wei Chong-Kai Wun are staying positive.

“There is the pressure to narrow the gap with our seniors and we also have juniors pushing us. It’s good to be in this situation, as we will always be on our toes to improve,” said Wei Chong.

“It’s always the hardest to play against our teammates. We have a 1-1 record against Aaron-Wooi and hopefully, we will bring out the best in each other.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun lost to the former world champions Aaron-Wooi Yik in the Indian Open last year in January but got their revenge at the Arctic Open nine months later.
