No. 12. Penn State took on the 1-7 Stonehill Skyhawks in the third-place match after a 2-0 loss against Cornell at the Ice Breaker Tournament.
Penn State defeated Stonehill 11-1.
The first penalty of the game came five minutes into the matchup with a roughing call on Stonehill forward Gracie Sacca. Penn State entered the game 5 -33 on power play opportunities during the season.
Despite several shots on net during the advantage, the Nittany Lions were unable to score as Stonehill’s penalty kill held strong.
Halfway through the first period, Grace Outwater had a one-on-one with Stonehill goalie Alexsa Caron and buried a goal in the top-right corner of the net for her third goal of the season, giving the blue and white a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes after the first Penn State goal, Outwater scored her second goal of the game off a rebound — the second time this season Outwater has scored two goals in one game.
A Penn State penalty with no time on the clock in the first period led to a Stonehill penalty shot. Bailey Feeney approached the net and fired a shot but Lauren Barbro held strong.
Penn State’s offense maintained control throughout the first period, out-shooting Stonehill 28-5 and taking a 2-0 lead into the second period.
Entering the second period, Penn State's offense stayed in control, while the defense kept playing well, not allowing Stonehill to get anything going in its offensive zone.
Five minutes into the second period, Penn State extended its lead to 3-0 with a Karolina Hengelmüller goal.
Less than a minute later, the Nittany Lions scored again as Maddy Christian’s shot ricocheted off of a Stonehill defender and into the net.
With 13:30 left in the second period, the second penalty on Stonehill was called for high sticking.
While Penn State was on the advantage, Stonehill forward Mia Kenmore found herself on a fastbreak. Kenmore put a puck in the top-right corner of the net, scoring a shorthanded goal and cutting the deficit to three.
Late in the second period, Tessa Janecke centered a puck for Stella Retrum to put the Nittany Lions up 5-1. Following that tally, a hooking penalty on Stonehill’s Sacca gave Penn State its third opportunity on the power play.
Unlike its first two chances, the blue and white converted on the advantage to extend its lead to 6-1 entering the final period..
Much like the second period, Penn State started the final period with two quick goals.
Two minutes into the final period, Nicole Hall put one in the back of the net. Thirty seconds later, Brianna Brooks scored another for the Nittany Lions to go up 8-1.
The Nittany Lions’ defense continued playing well, holding Stonehill to only 13 total shots halfway through the third period.
A Maddy Christian pass led to a backhand shot and goal for Abby Stonehouse for Penn State to tack on yet another goal.
A Stonehill turnover turned into a fastbreak for Outwater as she shot a puck off of the goal post and into the net and scored her third goal of the game to secure the hat trick — the first hat trick of her collegiate career.
Once again, Penn State scored multiple goals in a short period of time after McKenna Walsh scored Penn State’s third goal in a three-minute span, putting the Penn State lead at double digits with a score of 11-1.
Both defenses held strong for the remainder of the contest as Penn State defeated Stonehill 11-1 to secure third place in the Ice Breaker Tournament.
Penn State, now 7-3, begins a two-game home series against Syracuse on Thursday.
