We have reached halftime here between Brookfield East and Middleton, as the Spartans lead 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Harrison Kinney in the 28th minute. A yellow card was issued to Kinney in the 38th minute as well. At the half, Brookfield East has out-shot Middleton, 4-0. Corners are tied at one, and Brookfield East has five fouls to Middleton's four.
Brookfield East senior Harrison Kinney used his breakaway speed to get past the Middleton defense as he scored his 12th goal of the season to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
We remain scoreless in the 26th minute, but dual yellow cards were just issued to the Brookfield East bench and Middleton's Josh Lee. The latter was subbed for Teague Belgiano after receiving his yellow card.
Last year, Brookfield East and Middleton played to a 1-1 draw with Middleton winning 4-2 on a shootout to take the 2023 WIAA D1 state title. The No. 2 seeded Spartans (15-1-1) and No. 3 seeded Cardinals (20-3-1) have just kicked off here at Uihlein Soccer Park in a rematch that will determine who makes it back to the D1 title game tomorrow evening. This is Brookfield East's 20th appearance at state, while Middleton is back for the 15th time in program history.
For the second-consecutive year, a promising season for Marquette ends after extra time, as the No. 1 seeded Hilltoppers fall 2-1 to No. 4 seeded Green Bay Preble in the WIAA D1 state semifinal. The Hornets advance to the D1 final tomorrow at 7 p.m. with the win, their fourth program appearance in a WIAA state final. The goals for Preble came in the 8th minute on an unassisted tally by Talan LeCaptaine (5), and Edwin Santiago (9) in the 93rd minute, also unassisted. For Marquette, it was just the fourth time ever and first time in consecutive WIAA state appearances that the Hilltoppers did not reach the championship game after qualifying for state.
Disaster for the Hilltoppers leads to euphoria for Green Bay Preble, as Marquette keeper Connor Wyatt slipped while trying to field a loose ball in the box, creating an opportunity for Edwin Santiago of the Hornets. The senior struck home his ninth goal of the season to give Preble the 2-1 lead in the 93rd minutez. Marquette has seven minutes to find an equalizer.
After 90 total minutes played, we remain tied at 1-1. We will play 10 more, and if we remain tied, we will go to a shootout between Green Bay Preble and Marquette for the right to go to the WIAA D1 title game tomorrow. Marquette's 2023 state tournament run came to an end in a shootout against Middleton last year in the semifinal.
A scoreless second half here between Green Bay Preble and Marquette sends us to overtime, tied at 1-1. We will play two 10-minute overtime periods with no golden goal scenario. All 20 minutes will be played regardless of score.
Marquette had a chance to take the lead negated by a brilliant play by Green Bay Preble's Ben Rowell. With Green Bay Preble's goalie Landin Gauthier trying to retrieve a loose ball on the right edge of the box, Marquette's Bausch floated a shot towards the center of the net. Rowell beat it to the spot and cleared the attempt to earn a team save. We remain tied at 1-1.
The first of two WIAA D1 state boys soccer semifinals has reached halftime, as Green Bay Preble and Marquette are tied at 1. Preble's Talan LeCaptaine got the scoring started with an 8th minute goal, which was answered in the 12th minute by a Ben Bausch (17th) goal off assists from Christian Schlidt and Charlie Anguil for the Hilltoppers. Marquette had seven corner kick opportunities to Preble's one, and the Hilltoppers also out-shot the Hornets, 7-3.
Marquette executed on a corner kick opportunity in the 12th minute, as Christian Schlidt left his corner kick just past the far edge of the goal for Charlie Anguil to recenter witha header, and Ben Bausch to finish with another header. It is Bausch's 17th goal of the season to tie the game at 1. Schlidt (6) and Anguil (4) were each credited with assists.
Green Bay Preble has the early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal from Talan LeCaptaine in the 8th minute. A yellow card was issued to senior defender Ben Rowell for excessive celebration after the goal, the third time this tournament we have seen such a yellow card issued.
We have reached the WIAA Division 1 state semifinals, which begin with a matchup of No. 1 seed Marquette and No. 4 seed Green Bay Preble. Marquette makes its 23rd WIAA state appearance and fifth consecutive, while Green Bay Preble makes its 11th and first since 2018. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel prep sports reporter Zac Bellman here to bring us home today with updates from both WIAA D1 state semifinals this evening.

DeForest has controlled the ball and had more chances in the second half.
DeForest sophomore Antonio Anchondo’s goal in the 10th minute started the day’s scoring, and West senior Blake Frea tied it in the 32nd. Both goals were a case of right place, right time; neither was assisted.
West leads in shots, 5-2, and corner kicks, 2-0, an accurate picture of the play so far.
Both teams continue to look for their first win in the state tournament.
Senior Blake Frea got a foot on a ball bouncing around in front of Kolby Herschleb and pounded it home to tie the score at 1-1. The play started with a corner kick by Alfonso Mendez. The goal was Frea's third of the year.
